1. Mistake: Sequential Speed Is Everything
Reality: Sequential speed matters for large file copies. For everyday responsiveness, 4K random performance is more important. A drive advertised at 7,000MB/s may drop to a few hundred MB/s after SLC cache fills.
Verification: Read reviews that test sustained write speed and 4K random performance.

2. Mistake: PCIe 5.0 Is Always Better Than 4.0
Reality: PCIe 5.0 is faster but generates significantly more heat, requiring active cooling. Your motherboard and CPU must support it. In a thermally constrained small chassis, a throttled 5.0 drive may perform worse than a stable 4.0 drive.
Verification: Confirm platform support and evaluate cooling capacity.
3. Mistake: Ignoring NAND Type
Reality: Among PCIe 4.0 drives, TLC and QLC offer vastly different experiences. QLC performance after cache fills can be worse than a hard drive.
Verification: Check specification sheets for NAND type; avoid QLC for OS or write-heavy use.
4. Mistake: All TBW Is the Same
Reality: TLC drives typically have 600-1,200 TBW per TB. QLC drives may have only 200-400 TBW per TB—a 3-5x difference in lifespan.
Verification: Compare TBW ratings; longer warranties often (but not always) indicate higher endurance.
5. Mistake: Overlooking Cooling Requirements
Reality: High-speed PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 drives run hot. In a laptop or compact case, they may throttle constantly, in which case a PCIe 3.0 drive may perform better overall.
Verification: Check power consumption and thermal reviews; ensure a heatsink is included or available.
6. Mistake: Ignoring Controller and Firmware
Reality: The same NAND with different controllers can have vastly different performance and stability. Firmware bugs can cause drive dropouts or data corruption.
Verification: Prefer drives with mature controller platforms (Silicon Motion, Phison, Samsung, Western Digital in-house).
7. Quality Indicators
Clear NAND Type: TLC or better
Adequate TBW: 1TB ≥ 600TBW for TLC
