2026-04-27 16:45:53 TBW (Total Bytes Written) is the most authoritative metric for estimating the usable life of a PCIe SSD under real-world conditions.
1. What Is TBW?
TBW represents the total amount of data that can be written to a storage device over its lifetime. For example, a 1TB PCIe SSD with a TBW rating of 600TB can endure 600 terabytes of writes.

2. Factors Influencing Lifespan
NAND Type: SLC (100k cycles) > pSLC (50k) > TLC (1k-3k) > QLC (500)
Write Amplification (WA): Poor firmware can have WA of 3-5; good controllers keep WA below 1.3.
Operating Temperature: Higher temperatures accelerate wear; lifespan roughly halves for every 10°C increase.
Workload Type: Sequential writes are gentler than random small writes.
3. PCIe SSD Endurance Tiers
Consumer TLC: 600-1,200 TBW (1TB) for Gen4/Gen5
High-Endurance TLC / pSLC: 3,000+ TBW
Enterprise / Industrial: pSLC or SLC with much higher endurance
4. Lifespan Calculation
Years of Service = TBW ÷ (Daily Writes × 365)
Example: 1TB drive with 600TB TBW, writing 100GB per day:
600,000GB ÷ (100GB × 365) ≈ 16.4 years
Use SMART tools to monitor wear leveling count and spare blocks remaining. Replace when spare blocks drop below 10%.
