M.2 SSDs, especially NVMe versions, generate significant heat during operation. Excessive temperatures not only affect performance but also accelerate aging. Industrial M.2 SSDs incorporate multiple thermal management technologies.

Controller: NVMe controllers can consume 3-5W.

NAND Flash: Generates heat during sustained writes.

DRAM Cache: Models with DRAM add additional heat.

Heat Spreaders: Aluminum heat spreaders attach to controller and NAND via thermal pads, increasing surface area for dissipation.

Thermal Throttling: On-board temperature sensors trigger speed reduction when thresholds are exceeded.

Low-Power Design: Selection of low-power controllers and NAND.

3. Selection Recommendations

For sealed enclosures, high-temperature workshops, or NVMe high-speed workloads, choose industrial M.2 SSDs with heat spreaders. Verify that heat spreader height is compatible with the chassis.
