1. PLP Implementation Challenges for M.2
Unlike 2.5-inch SSDs, M.2 SSDs have limited PCB space, making it difficult to accommodate large capacitors. Industrial M.2 SSDs use alternative approaches:
Tantalum Capacitor Array: Multiple small capacitors connected in parallel.
Firmware Optimization: Shortened cache flush intervals to reduce data at risk.
Journaling Writes: Log-based write mechanisms for recoverability after power loss.

2. How PLP Works
When main power is lost, energy storage components provide milliseconds of backup power, enabling the controller to flush cache data to NAND and update FTL mapping tables.
3. Applications Requiring PLP
In-Vehicle Systems: Frequent ignition cycles cause power fluctuations.
Industrial Controllers: Factory power may experience surges or drops.
Medical Devices: Patient data must survive accidental disconnection.
Edge Computing Devices: Unstable power sources in field deployments.
4. Verifying PLP
Not all "industrial" M.2 SSDs include true PLP. Check datasheets for explicit "Power-Loss Protection" or "capacitor backup" specifications. For critical installations, request third-party test reports.
